The final project event of CONSENS took place in Barcelona, Spain, on 13-14 December 2017.
More than 100 participants, mainly experts and managers from process and life science industry, technology providers, research organizations and academia, attended the event.
Numerous promising technologies that were developed for optimal process and plant operation were presented, and cross-sectorial exploitation of technologies developed were discussed in interactive parallel workshop sessions. The participants very much appreciated the possibility to learn about results from five EU research projects (CONSENS, DISIRE, iCspec, ProPAT, and RECOBA) in one single joint event.

CONSENS consortium partner Lukas Wander (BAM) was awarded with the PAT Award of the German Working Group Process Analytical Technology for his Master Thesis “Study of modular continuous processes via online NMR spectroscopy” at Humboldt University Berlin (“Untersuchung modularer kontinuierlicher Prozesse mittels Online-NMR-Spektroskopie”), which originated from his work at BAM within the framework of CONSENS.

The Final Project Event of CONSENS will take place in Barcelona, Spain, on 13-14 October 2017.
The event is part of a workshop ‘Tackling the Future of Plant Operation – Jointly Towards a Digital Process Industry’, a joint initiative of the five EU H2020-funded research projects CONSENS, DISIRE, iCspec, ProPAT, and RECOBA.
Representatives from the process industry, technology providers, research organizations and academia are invited to review promising technologies for optimal plant operation. CONSENS Partner TUDO attended the International Process Intensification Conference, a joint event during the World Congress on Chemical Engineering, in Barcelona in October 2017.
Prof. Sebastian Engell and Thilo Goerke (TUDO) actively contributed with a talk on results achieved within the CONSENS project on October 4th, 2017, giving a presentation “Batch-to-Conti Transfer of the Production of a Highly Viscous Copolymer System”, which was followed by around 80 congress participants, mostly coming from industry and academia.
Getting close to the end of the project life-time, the CONSENS consortium gathered for a plenary meeting in Nice, France on October 5-6, 2017.
Main focus of this 1 ½-days meeting was set on discussions around progresses made in the project’s use cases, and the planning of the work to be performed within the upcoming weeks, as well as on the preparation of a public workshop “Tackling the future of plant operation – Jointly towards a digital process industry”, jointly organized by 5 SPIRE projects, which will take place in Barcelona on December 13-14, 2017.

SMASH is a scientific meeting highlighting Small Molecule NMR research and applications, held in alternating years between North America and Europe, which brings together the leading scientists from academia and industry in one international meeting to cross the boundaries between research and application.
The 4th European Conference on Process Analytics and Control Technology (EuroPACT 2017) took place in Potsdam, Germany, on 10 to 12 of May 2017, and attracted over 220 experts in the field of PAT and control from research and industry.
CONSENS was one out of 5 SPIRE projects (CONSENS, DISIRE, FUDIPO, IbD, ProPAT) representing SPIRE PPP at this event.
Information material on SPIRE PPP and its approach, as well as on the 5 projects, was made available to visitors on the dedicated booth, attracting visitors who showed big interest.

CONSENS partners actively participated in the ProcessNet-Jahrestagung und 32. DECHEMA-Jahrestagung der Biotechnologen, which took place in Aachen, Germany on Sept. 12th–15th, 2016.
ProcessNet is the German Platform for process engineering, chemical engineering, and chemistry with over 5,000 experts from science, economy, and administration. The annual meeting took place in Aachen, Germany, with over 350 participants to exchange experiences, to discuss current issues and new scientific to identify trends. CONSENS partner BAM presented the first functioning prototype of its online NMR analyser module, which was developed in CONSENS. Hannover Fair Hannovermesse, Hannover, Germany) is the world’s leading trade show for industrial technology with 200.000 attendees.
BAM’s development and validation of this portable online NMR spectrometer supports their mission of enabling “Safety in Technology and Chemistry” and contributes to the development of innovative solutions for smart manufacturing, including public safety and personalized analytics.
The CONSENS project participated in the SPIRE project’s conference and in the Impact Workshop in Brussels in April, 2016.
As a member of the SPIRE community, the CONSENS project was presented at the SPIRE Conference by the project coordinator, Manuel Pereira Remelhe, in front of a broad audience of SPIRE members, the European Commission, supporters, partners and other stakeholders. This conference was aimed at discussing possible synergies and actions that can deliver the project’s objectives.

The CONSENS partners met in Dusseldorf on the 2nd and 3rd November, 2015 for a consortium meeting. It was organized by the project coordinator Bayer Technology Services. The meeting focused on the detailed discussion of the sensor developments and the application cases. All the project partners were represented on this meeting where the new CONSENS flyers and poster were distributed.
The partners also had the opportunity to welcome Mr. Hans Eder who participated in the meeting as a monitor on behalf of the European Commission.

Dr. Michael Maiwald (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) gave a presentation on “ Low Field NMR spectroscopy for Online Monitoring“ at the INVITE lecture hall. The scientific talk provided an overview of the current state of the art of NMR spectroscopy. A wide range of application examples were presented by Mr. Maiwald. In the subsequent dialogue with the present chemical experts the challenges and opportunities of NMR spectroscopy were discussed.
The 2nd CONSENS Consortium Meeting took place on June 24th and at Villasimus nearby Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.
The meeting was organized by the project member Massimiliano Grosso from the Universita degli studi di Cagliari. The partners had the opportunity to discuss the progress of the project and to present the current status of the definition of the case studies.
The next project meeting is planned to take place in Düsseldorf in the beginning of November 2015.
The official kick-off meeting of the CONSENS project was held in Brussels from 22nd to 23rd January 2015. As a partner of the project, P&G invited all project partners to this two-day-meeting at P&G Brussels Innovation Center.
